CHAPTER 24

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO

Turan had gotten to know Carolina Avila well enough that sometimes he was invited to stay for dinner. He liked her parents. They struck him as good people—open, friendly, nonjudgmental. But it did bother him that her mother, Marisol, was employed by the New Mexico State Police. Her boss was a major who ran the NMSP Special Operations Bureau. Turan wasn’t sure exactly what that meant, but it definitely wasn’t information he shared with Bazir Haqqani. In fact, he’d told Bazir that Mrs. Avila was a school traffic guard and that’s why she wore a uniform.

Her father Al, short for Alejandro, was a claims adjuster with a regional automobile insurer. Turan enjoyed watching fútbol, or soccer, with Al. He’d even been invited to go with Al to a local match, but had begged off, knowing Bazir would never permit it. In fact, Turan felt exceptionally fortunate that his handler even let him spend time with Carolina. But he knew Al would ask him again, and he wasn’t sure how he could get out of it next time.

Marisol, Carolina’s mother, was a beautiful woman. It was clear to Turan how Carolina had come by her own beauty. Marisol was also an incredible cook. Tonight, they had just finished a meal of chicken in a mole poblano sauce with enchiladas. Mrs. Avila had made it a point to let Turan know that Carolina had done the heavy lifting when it came to making the sauce, a complicated, multi-step process.

Turan helped Carolina with the dishes and cleanup, and then they planned to take a walk around the neighborhood. First, to be polite, they joined her parents, who were watching the evening news in in the TV room.

As they sat down, Carolina held her new iPhone up and snapped a selfie of her curled up next to Turan.

Surprised, he said, “Why did you do that? Give me that picture.”

Carolina smiled impishly. “I want to send a picture of you to my cousin Sarita in Albuquerque.”

“Ah…I think that’s a bad idea. We need to destroy it. Now.” Turan was clearly agitated.

“Why? What’s so wrong with a picture of a friend?”

“Yeah,” Al said with a friendly grin. “You’re not a drug dealer on the lam, are you?”

“No, no, of course not,” the words spilled rapidly out of Turan. “I just…I don’t know. I don’t like it.”

Just then a news alert interrupted the regular TV programming. A young blonde woman affiliated with the FOX station in El Paso, Texas, was standing in front of a pylon sign identifying the location as the William Beaumont Army Medical Center. A smaller brown metal sign on a fenced section to her right identified the gate as Alabama Street. The young woman was talking with ersatz excitement about a story that had just leaked from the medical center.

“KFOX14 has just learned from an unidentified source that there is a survivor of last Tuesday’s ambush of four Customs and Border Patrol agents and two sheriff’s deputies. Originally, it was reported that there had been no survivors.
